Just need to get some things off my chest.
In January 2010, I started my business. Immediately I was drawn to posed newborn photography. I have LOVED newborns since I was a young girl, so this makes a ton of sense. I followed the only two photographers doing this at that time and drooled over their work. I was obsessed. I studied images DAILY and began my journey as a posed newborn photographer. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED every second. I truly believed in what I was doing. I truly hope my past clients treasure their images forever.
My own images from years past as a newborn posing photographer:
But here is the thing I didn’t realize. This posed newborn gig was a BIG FAT TREND. Not only that, but about 3 years ago, in 2014-2015 or so, I was scrolling through my social media feed, unable to identify one photographer from the next. and no clue how to differentiate each baby from another.
It dawned on me then. We were using babies as props. We weren’t telling their story. We cant tell his personality or much about one over another. The images are extremely edited and nothing like the true newborn they are. Their stork bite? Gone. Isn’t the whole point of photographing them to remember WHO they were?
Babies have become props and in it, we have lost telling THEIR story about who they are. Babies are PEOPLE.
So, closed up my studio and slowly moved away from posed newborn photos. I then went to in home lifestyle baby photography.
But my soul still isn’t fulfilled. and in 2017, I finally found my TRUE calling. See, looking back at early 2010, I was naturally a documentary photographer. I then FORCED myself into a safe place and box of posed newborn photography. Its safe and predictable.
Where I am at now, is truly documentary, undirected, RAW and REAL photography. Day in the life, Film and photos. I want people to be able to look at their images and remember THEIR baby as he or she was naturally. Maybe their little 8 day old had his hands up by his face 24/7. Maybe he made a weird look, or had a stork bite, or maybe his toe was abnormally long. I want them to experience sensations when they see their images, or watch their film, from those FIRST days. Those days they will never ever get back. I want my clients to lose the facade and embrace the imperfections. Because Photography tells a story. and that is what FILLS MY SOUL.
Garrett hasn’t yet spent much time outside. So the wonder on his face was absolutely amazing. The fall leaves and the weather were so beautiful. I really LOVE this family. They are warm and sweet and loving. They truly embrace their togetherness. They do not take life for granted.
Here is Garrett’s 6 Month Mini Film:
Baby Grayson – he’s so funny. and he thinks everything is hilarious. He of course, had to eat during his session, or he surely would have melted away. We had such fun capturing his milestone session. Looking back on his first year, which has one session left, I just adore all the films and photos capturing him as he grew and changed. I love making his momma cry every session, with powerful films.
Grayson’s 9 Month Film:
When I think of Lucy, the word sweet comes to mind. She’s just rolly and sweet. A snuggler for sure. She and her sister are developing their bond and you can see, its so strong already. It will be amazing for them to go back and watch the film and see the images of the beginning of their sweet sisterhood.
Lucy’s 6 Month Film:
Ashton turned one. Im so sad, because I just ADORE this family. Im sure I will see them each year, but still….. not seeing them every 3 months will be sad. Ashton is adorable as ever. He really performed for his photos and film this session. We had such fun and his personality really came through! The weather was perfect. It truly was one of those perfect days and sessions. The sunset was outstanding. The water was amazing to look at. It was just a very peaceful session. A great way to end a great year of baby milestones!
Christine & Jason: It has been a HUGE honor to capture both of your children during their first year. I adore your family and look forward to future sessions. xoxo
Ashton’s 12 Month Mini Film:
Lealand is one. Even as the photographer, I cannot believe how fast the first year goes. You just NEVER ever get it back. Even if its a really hard year, its a very important year that has the most dependence. The baby moments are so far and few between. They only snuggle for such a short time. They grow up and leave. I want Moms to remember their personality that first year, how they loved to eat dirt and hated touching grass. How they made this certain face when they were displeased.
Lealand has a very big voice and lots of opinions, and she in only ONE y’all. ONE. 13 year old Lealand should be interesting. I had fun capturing this time and cant wait to watch her grow into a spunky willful lady!
Bennett is always such joy to photograph. He is ONE and walking and running! I was definitely chasing him! HA! I love this stage of partial independence and still many moments of snuggles and nursing. You just never get this back. Its such a short time in life! This family is such joy and so happy. I love capturing their intense love for B. Truly, an honor.
Bennett’s one year film:
Miles loved the water at the creek, for his 6 month session. It was really beautiful. We had the most amazing sunset. The warm tones and pink hues of this session truly make me happy. Miles was a little tired for his session, but we managed to keep him happy! I love his sweet angelic face, and those baby blue eyes!
Kennedy’s first year is flying by y’all! Seems like just yesterday I was photographing her Momma’s Maternity Session. It was by far one of my favorite maternity shoots. We have photographed Kennedy Every 3 months since birth and each and every session has been equally glorious. However, it was nice to finally get outside for her photos. At the beginning of the session, something happened that, surprisingly, has never happened at a session! We were walking to our first starting place, getting ready to start with Family Photos. When the baby pooped all over momma! It was SUCH a mess, and no, she did not have a back up outfit! But my favorite part was how she rolled with it. She cleaned it with some baby wipes and waited for it to dry, photographing Kennedy during this time. It dried in no time, thanks to the summer heat 😉 and we were strategic with posing! I love when my clients roll with the punches, because 9 times out of 10, something will happen when it comes to photographing babies. Its just the way it is! But how we respond makes all the difference!
Here is Kennedy’s sweet film:
Magnolia, and those CURLS. Man she tugs at my heart strings! We had a blast capturing her, mostly nursing for her session. She is so full of spunk and joy! She has the most adorable round face. and blue eyes. Our weather was spectacular for Nashville in August! Better yet, her momma has a boutique in Magnolia’s name. it’s called Magnolia Jaymes
I try to do very little posing during sessions. I love shooting more natural lifestyle portraiture or even full on documentary. I love capturing raw unposed emotions. and making people cry 🙂
